Mid 50s today so most of the snow is gone, I spent the day putting up the xmas lights outside, wearing shorts and flip-flops.

Gaming was quite a surprise as we had an unexpected guest, Jeremy (son of one of our original group) came up to visit for the holidays, and when we got to game time suggested we try Dungeon World. Interesting mechanic, similar to Fate but seems to place emphasis on rolling the dice more often (rewards are given for doing just that). Very collaborative system too, world was created on the fly, as we made characters.

It was fine enough but what happened that grabbed me was I started (for some reason) thinking that I'd really like to do a Fate Campaign based on Lankhmar. Then Laura started asking me questions about it and now I have to write down my ideas so the campaign will be ready when I present the idea to the players (Think of distopic fantasy kind of like Shadowrun but mostly humanocentric and without cyber). Players would be a smalltime gang that has defied the much more organized Thieves' Guild and is trying to avoid being destroyed by them.

Next week Golden Age Superheroes! And possibly the discover of why, exactly Todd Tomorrow turned EVIL!

Find a 1st ed copy of Lankhmar. The map is worth it.

Most of the maps are online now. I still need to talk to the group and see if they're willing to play along with me.

Speaking of, we were supposed to be doing Golden Age Supers this weekend, but Eric and Jen will not be back until late (I would be willing to go on without them, given that there is another sub adventure that doesn't require Todd Tomorrow's presence, but the players may feel differently), so I don't know what we'll be doing this weekend. Though I am going to push for the Lankhmar Fate thing.

There's also a possible Modern Supers game on Sat (though again Eric won't be there and I haven't heard confirmation from Dave at Scholars (our FLGS)).

So tonight we played Redneck Life. Had a really fun time, with some great laughs, but the best laugh was caused by one of the players getting a card that said "A couple of the Darryl's take your vehicle for a joyride and crash it into a tree." The only "vehicle" the player had at the moment was the donkey. We all cracked up, and some really bad innuendos kept the laughter going for quite a bit.

For those that have played classic Deadlands, are the modules usually so linear & railroady (even the ones not dealing with the rail wars)?

Mostly ignored published stuff but I recall "rail" being highly appropriate as a term. It was the late 90's and people still thought in terms of choosing between attack and holding to attack later as their only options in play so games needed rails to advance.

Hrrrm... :|

While the Skype game's been OK for the most part, I admit, I'm not getting that level of tension that I would have liked. Didn't help that we were near-immediately "convinced" to assist the Agency after the first story (from the Marshall's Guide).

And there's a Whatley Blood Mage in the party (who is co-GMing). So, anytime there is tension, she pulls out a spell and then has ungodly luck in card drawing and dice throwing and the threat is squished. Since the other GM is using modules (and is running a US Marshall), it just feels...eh.

I was running folks through some of the modules. There are some good ones, but the problem is, the best of them are TPKs in waiting (Night Train) and unless you have a party of do-gooders, you're probably going to need to have work-arounds for getting folks involved.

Yeah, we're not the most heroic bunch. *glares at the Whatley for bringing up the Donner Party for the umpteenth time*

And oh, joy of joy, we're being nudged towards Gomorrah!

Suggest they play 7th Sea instead.

Yeah, but then I'd have to run it and I want to be a player for a change.

The husband is at least running a (friends-only) 7th Sea PBP, so there is that.

ETA: And the hubby is definitely earning his Evil GM Stripes on that -- even if so far, I'm the only one closest to being a hero there. (KRC FTW!)

I PLAYED 7TH SEA THIS WEEK!!!!

Good ending to Laura's plot, we fought the bad guy (well I fought him) and the rest of the players figured out how stop the worlds most irritating maze from messing us up any further.

Next up, Golden-Age Superheroes!

Went to my monthly FLGS game and I THOUGHT there'd be enough folks, but alas, no such luck. So Eric and I sat around and caught up before we headed our own ways. Today, Golden-Age Supers and the mystery of why these other-dimensional people think Todd Tomorrow is a villain!

Fun stuff. Found out a different "Todd Tomorrow" is responsible for this timeline, and fun of fun, they learned it via Todd Tomorrow's greatest nemesis, The Retro-Kahn (who bounces back and forth through time trying to adjust the timestream to ensure he will become the ruler of his own time). Now they're on their way via a secret tunnel into the ruler of this world's main city. But within, they've discovered a lot of strange creatures...

Hopefully, our 3.5 D&D game will be starting up again next week. Our GM had to move to 3rd shift and needed to get used to his new schedule first.

In 7th Sea news, Mike is learning the ways of the Evil GM...I'm so proud. *sniff*

Today we're supposed to be doing board games. But I don't know how many of our regulars are going to stay home (it being groundhog day after all).

There are very few board games that will not facilitate 2 players. If you need recommendations, ask.

Actually, Everyone showed up. We ended up playing Arkham Horror (but given we only had 4 hours to play, couldn't get finished). Was lots of fun.

Picked up Elder Sign and Flash Point last week. Elder Sign plays like Arkham Horror (if you've ever played it) but replaces the board with cards for locations and everything is a yahtzee style dice game. You start with 6 dice that have certain symbols on them and you are basically trying to roll sets for the location you are on to complete the quest. Alot easier than Arkham Horror and honestly alot more fun IMO was a big hit.
The other game Flash Point is a coop firefighter rescue game. Plays alot like pandemic, it was very simplistic (family rules, we have another set to add to it later) but overall it was quick and there was alot of tension as we were trying to save people before the house fell down. Both A+ games imo. Pick them up if you are in a coop mood.

Agreed on Flash Point. Played with the advanced rules for the first time Sunday and really enjoyed it. Very colorful and tense.

If you like Cooperative games I cannot recommend Sentinels of the Multiverse enough. Simply a wonderful game with tons of replayability and flavor. I recommend getting the Sidekick app for your phone or tablet to make the game really a breeze to manage.

I also got a chance to play Hanabi this past Sunday as recommended by Sal. It is a truly wonderful game that I ran out and bought right after playing it. I think I'll teach it to my parents.

I was real tempted to buy this last year at Origins. I think this year it's going to be my big purchase.

I'm limiting myself to one game a month (unless i just stumble into a really huge deal someplace) plus origins.

But i'm trying to skip grabbing games too similar in style of play. Sentinels is currently off my list because it's another card deck game and I have like 5 of those. (plus it's really not great as a 2 player)

I am looking at Fortune and Glory, Firefly, Agents of Smersh, Tokaido, Robinson Crusoe, Ticket to Ride Europe, The Resistance and Tzolk'in somewhere in the near future. Not all will end up at my house as too many are too similar in style.
