Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpFinished character for Rogues of Canguine. Decided against Backgrounds or Hubrises.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpDoes anybody ever have henchmen or servants?
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpNot in our campaigns. We have enough bodies at the table. It's one of the few things we draw a line on because I know exactly how far you can break it.
It is entirely possible within the system to build a character with 26 followers, brutes, followers followers, etc. (We call this the Jeremy rule) I don't mind growing old... but I hate growing up.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpAnd some of those followers can have followers. and those followers can have a ship.Eventually, you have 6 PCs and a navy.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation Help
Everything Dave and Ken said is absolutely correct. Now that said, if you wanted folks to take care of your house or to run to the store to get groceries, by all means knock yourself out. Just nobody who's going to accompany you on adventures.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpFrancois has a whole staff of people... who never have an in game impact. just the army of people who maintain all the stuff he breaks, clean his messes, make his hats and so forth. None of them have stats (unless Sam got bored in the last week and populated my retainers) and none of them have speaking parts in the campaign unless its funny and im running the PA.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpSam just walked in smirking, Ken I am blaming you if he doesn't sleep tonight!
"He used the Force!"
"Yeah, mass times acceleration!"
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation Help
I just saw this. It's too late for me to start tonight. Here's who I think Francois would employ. Butler Cook Coachman Farrier Footman Gardner Groom Maid Milliner Valet
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation Help
Francois with only ONE cook??? Only a savage would have only one cook!
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation Help
You are absolutely correct. Francois would employ a chef who would hire extra cooks as needed. Here are your 10 servants of note.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpSam. I woke up everyone i live with because i fell out of my chair laughing as i read thru them.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation Help
(BTW: September 30 was almost two years ago.) It always takes me months/years to create a character.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpReally Mike? Your gonna try and steal Sam's moment to shine? I keep "losing" the pdfs so he has to make more (I can nearly hear the squeals of joy all the way in Boston), and you're going to take that away from him?
I thought HoA was about lifting each other up. For Shame, Mike. For Shame...
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation Help
Actually, I was about to post that the Fourth weekend was very creative; I now have one proposal @ 130 HP with Hubris and one @ 115 with Virtue. By the way, why 105 + 30 = 135 or 130 even? What is the purpose of this? I assume that 115 is alright!?
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation Help
Mark, The internet is forever. They're still in your inbox. Mike, We're up to 50 templates total. I've cut myself off there. I've posted the names of the templates below. The template names are just how the templates themselves were designed. 30 points are enough to turn them into almost anything else. For example, the Entertainer template can easily be turned into an "Indiana Jones" style archaeologist. Secret Society Dovecote Guardian Tailor Skilled Barrister Collector Enforcer Farmer Grifter Hunter Libertine Master of Arms Missionary Officer Spy Teacher Tinker Sorcerer Bard Boyar Exile Gentry Healer Magician Skjæren Strega Swordsman School Archer Bandit Berserker Bodyguard Burglar Capo Don Duelist Entertainer Fighter Freiharr Friar Highlander Marine Opahkung Physician Pistoleer Raider Sailor Scholar Smuggler Sniper Soldier Streltsy Whaler Wrestler
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpI thought I would send a PM to Sam, but it seems not to have worked. What did I do wrong?
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation Help
Sorry, I didn't realize I'd gotten a message. You're only the second person in 9 years to PM me.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation Help
I used to send them all the time, but not lately. The HoA boards have tamed quite a bit (and lost many colorful characters). Naturally, on the one hand, I might want to post my Canguine character to all, to show how clever I can be/she is. But, that would raise big targets on our backs. So, I won't post publicly yet, but hold out for a PM.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation Help
Did you have 10 posts on this new login? If not, it won't let you send PMs. I see you have 16 now so that will have resolved itself.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation Help
You do know I majored in psychology, right? I can't maths... Were you wondering why I set the points up the way I did? If so, here was my thinking. 100 point characters are pretty low level, and I wanted everyone to be able to master whatever suited their fancy over the course of the campaign. So I thought, hey, lets give them a boost of 30 xp just to start off. That way (assuming 2 adventures, plus PA per year would be enough to master a swordschool, or sorcery, plus add some points into stats.) The +5HP bonus was to try and get people to use the templates as they'll be a bit more powerful than making your own (templates let me shortcut the review process since I know I'm just going to have to look at where the XP has been spent). And then I don't get any "I have 5 followers, and they have five each, and those 25 have five each, and between all of them I have access to every single advantage and secret society in the game" characters. PLUS then all the characters have hubrises (sp?) and we all know I love to make use of those...
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpSo, I can see why 130 or 135 might be preferable to an overseer. On the one hand, I admire a well thought-out character concept/design. But, yes, it can be a pain to deal with those numbers.
Before calculators, I often did my numbers manually. Lately, however, even long additions and accuracy are getting ... difficult. As it happens, my Canguine character came together efficiently with just five skills. Often my 7th Sea characters would average 20+. The drawback, of course, was getting all of those key stats up to 5. Anyway, I'm looking more toward Canguine now than before.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpThis advantage was left off Crystal Keep by mistake; I assume it's still valid.
Musical Ear (2 pt. Advantage) Two free raises to all checks involving the composition of music or the playing, from memory, of pieces before heard. Also one free raise to determine any pattern or unnatural influence (Sorte, Invisible College Code, etc.) in the music heard. (General Feat) +4 competence bonus to Perform checks involving playing music, and +2 competence bonus to attempts to discern code(s), etc. hidden in the music.
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpMike, the only reference I can find to Musical Ear is Bartholomeus Corradin. He has it as an advantage but I cannot find anywhere that it's actually described. Can you point out to me where you found that?
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpI remember Crystal Keep had some changes years ago. I don't think I was mistaken, but it's possible.
Silver Gateway still has Musical Ear now. silver gateway 7th Sea
Re: Rogues of Canguine Character Creation HelpMusical Ear does not appear in print with an actual mechanic anywhere in 1st edition materials (outside of the Corradin stat block where it has no listed ability)
What Mike is listing is very certainly someone's homebrew because 2 point advantages don't do as much as what is listed. There are too many bonuses and the ones listed are stronger than what is normal on a 2 point advantage. The part about a competence bonus is the give away. A +4 and +2 just isn't how the system grants things. What Musical Ear should be is a redefined version of "Spark of Genius" from the Invisible College. A 2 point advantage that grants a FREE RAISE to all checks relating to music (including listening for hidden patterns) I don't mind growing old... but I hate growing up.
